Higashi Uraji (Shimoda Kaido)

Walking Tour

Higashi Uraji (Shimoda Kaido)

A 1 kilometer walk along the old highway on Izu's east coast. Be transported back to old Japan when narrow trails through mountain passes were the main roads. We'll see unusual plant life, mountain scenery, a stone quarry where Izu's famous stone (used in the walls of Edo Castle) was cut and hauled away.

About the tour

The tour starts at the former site of the Oshima Tea House in Ajiro, a neighborhood in the southern part of Atami City. The tour ends at Chozenji Temple in Usami, a neighborhood in the north of Ito City.  This is the most well preserved and maintained section of the old road in Eastern Izu.

For centuries, the Higashiura-ji (East Back Road) was the main route along Izu’s east coast. The road ran from Odawara Castle to Shimoda, an important port in southern Izu. Records of this road begin around 1170, at the end of the Heian Period, but they were certainly in use long before that. Awaken the lives — some famous, many ordinary — of travelers in ancient Japan.
