Ito History Tour

Sukechika Ito

Ito is named after Sukechika Ito, a samurai whose loyalty to one clan put him at odds with Japan’s first shogun. That first shogun, Minamoto Yoritomo, was exiled to Izu as a teenager and watched over by Ito.

This tour will introduce the city of Ito and show you places connected to that historical period at the end of the Heian Era. You’ll also learn about Ito’s connection to another famous shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa, who ordered the construction of Japan’s first western style ship here under the supervision of William Adams, lead character in James Clavell’s novel-turned-TV drama “Shogun.”
